We just build a house and the builder uses poplar for the banister (upgrade to oak was more $) he said that if we used a medium to dark stain it would be fine. Well it looks terrible, almost black in spots and much darker than expected. Had we of known, we would of gladly paid for an upgrade. Now we're stuck any suggestions. Painting it white is an option but we have ballisters and I think it would look strange. Can it be fixed or lightened? Builder has no suggestions except paint or replacing it $3500.
