: Looding for a way to put an antigue finish of a new project made from pine.

There are many ways to apply an antique finish to pine. I'll give you one Free one here then encourage you to buy one of my finishing books for other methods.

If you are trying to duplicate the mellow orange color of old pine try this method. (Try it on a sample of pine first to see if you like it.) Mix one cup of baking soda with one quart of water. Apply the solution to the pine and let it dry. Then wash it off with clear water. This will darken the wood and give it a slight greenish appearance. It will also raise the grain (make the wood rough) so lightly sand it with fine sandpaper, but be careful not to sand off the color. When the wood is completely dry apply several coats of orange shellac. The shellac will cancel out the greenish color and give the wood the color of old finishes.

For more antique finishes for pine refer to my books. Wood Finishers handbook has a section on finishing pine and duplicating antique finishes. Finishing Basics gives some simple to apply antique finishes. For the ultimate antique finish refer to Classic Finishing Techniques. It gives directions for applying finishes using the original materials and techniques used hundreds of years ago.
